My Holiday Movies

Okay, like I’ve promised you before, here is the list of some movies that I’ve watched during the holiday. Here we go!

#1. Garuda di Dadaku

Casts : Emir Mahira, Aldo Tansani, Marsha Aruan, Ikranagara, Maudy Koesnaedi, Ari Sihasale, Ramzi

Director : Ifa Isfansyah

In the middle of some horror movies attack in most of cinema in Indonesia, we can hardly find a good movie that have a lot of lesson learns. One of them is Garuda di Dadaku. The main theme of this movie is about sport, football for specific. Bayu (Mahira) have had a strong ambition to be a professional football player since he was young, but his grandfather (Ikranagara)  really oppose with Bayu’s decision. In his mind, by being a football player, his grandson will not have a prospective future. Bayu never give up. With the help of his best friend, Heri (Tansani), finally he can register to a junior football club. He also finally can pass the selection to be one of the player in ‘Under 13 Football Competition’.

This is not a fabulous movie but I have to admit that nowadays we rarely see movies with the same theme as this. Indonesian children need a movie like this so that they can grow up naturally and enjoying their childhood. I hope in the future Indonesian film-makers will make more movies like this.  Maybe we can make our local PIXAR that produce animated educative movie. One thing that I don’t really like about this movie is the predictable ending that make this movie more like ‘sinetron’.

Anyway , I like this movie’s tagline :

Be brave and reach all your dreams

#2. Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince

Casts : Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Bonnie Wright, Tom Felton, Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent

Director : David Yates

This movie is adapted from the sixth JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Harry (Radcliffe) discovered a mysterious book signed by the half blood prince in the Prof. Horace Slughorn’s (Broadbent) potions class. Suddenly, Harry became so clever in potions because of that book, even more clever than Hermione (Watson).  Harry also did a private lesson with Dumbledore (Gambon) to find out about Lord Voldemort. This movie also tells a lot about the early history of Lord Voldemort (formerly Tom Marvolo Riddle). The relationship between Harry and Ginny, Ron’s sister (Wright) also became closer vice versa with Ron (Grint) and Hermione’s relationship.

This is one of my 2009’s most awaited movie. But, to be honest, this movie is so under my expectation. I’m very dissapointed with this Harry Potter movie. The novel was exciting but the movie was dissapointing. Too much drama about their relationship. I don’t like it. This is suppose to be not a drama movie. I was expected to see a fantasy movie full of wonderful scoring and visual effect, but then I saw a drama movie. This is so not Harry Potter. I hope the next movie will be much better than this. And for those of you who haven’t read the novel yet, you’re so lucky since you won’t compare both the novel and the film.

#3. He’s Just Not That Into You

Hes-Just-Not-That-Into-You

Casts : Justin Long, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Connely, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson

Director : Ken Kwapis

The main character in this movie is Gigi (Goodwin). She always think that every man she’s dating  is her Mr. Right. She also always expected a phone call from that “Mr. Right” after their first dating. But, unfortunately it was all end up with no phone calls. All of those events really made her depressed. She didn’t understand the man’s mindset. In her mind, man is a very unpredictable creature. After all of those unfortunate event, she met Alex (Long), the bartender at the cafe where she met her first date before. Alex gave her some ‘tutorials’  to interpretted the signs from her dates. But, somehow finally Gigi ended up with Alex.

After seeing this movie, I thought thai it was just another romantic comedy movie. Then I tweeted about this and my friend’s reply really change my previous thought about the movie. Sometimes we, girls, have too high expectation about our dates/crushes. Yeah, me too have been there and done that.

#4. Crossing Over

Casts : Harrison Ford, Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd, Jim Sturgess

Director : Wayne Kramer

This is a story about the struggle of immigrants in USA to get their Green Card. Getting a Green card means a lot for them. It means that they can work, which is a really hard thing for USA’s immigrants. I don’t know whether this movie based on a true event or not, but in my opinion there are still plenty of sarcastic discriminations for immigrants in the USA, especially for middle- east immigrants. Based on Taslima’s character in this movie. She has lived in USA for almost of her life. She was born in Saudi Arabia but she grows up in USA. At school, she experienced some hard times. She is being discriminated just because she is an Arabic and she’s a Moslem. She’s also a victim of peer bullying. After she made an essay about her interests in jihad, she’s being expelled from her school and she’s also finally sent back to her homeland with her mom.

This is a heart breaking story. I was full of tears in almost all parts of this movie, not because I’m sappy. Living in USA is not as easy as you think. Why did I tell you most about Taslima in the previous paragraph? Because I’m proud of her. I’m not a Moslem, but I know how hard it is to be a minority in your own society. This movie is not just a story about Taslima’s struggle, but this is a story of some foreign people trying to be accepted and treated normally in that superpower country. Some of them finally can get the acceptances, but some of them can’t and they are sent back to their homelands.

This is a very recommended movie. Think twice before you decide to change your nationality because it’s not as easy as you think.

That’s all movies I’ve had watched during the holiday. Actually I watched lots of movie but that’s the top 4 that I like the most. College will start on Tuesday, so I guess I won’t do blogging routinely since I must be very busy on the next semester but I’ll try my best to write about some interesting things on my blog.

Keep reading this blog because I surely will post an article about Indonesia’s Independence Day. So, stay tune! Hahaha..
